Federal Career Intern Program

The Federal Career Intern Program is an entry-level employment and career development program designed to recruit outstanding individuals to positions at the GS-5, 7, and 9 levels. You do not have to be a student to qualify for these positions. The Federal Career Intern Program is open to recent graduates, current federal employees, and veterans.

As a career intern, you will participate in a two-year professional development program that will enhance both your technical and leadership skills, and develop your potential for future advancement. Upon completion of the program, you will be eligible for placement in a permanent position (permanent placement, however, is not guaranteed).

Program Features

Features of this program include:

  • New employee orientation with an overview of the Federal government and NEA operations,
  • Performance Plans to note expectations and document performance,
  • Individual Development Plan to identify developmental training needs,
  • Access to in-house, off-site, web-based and self-paced training,
  • Rotational assignments in various offices (minimum 30 days), if required, and
  • Ongoing on-the-job training, coaching, career development, and performance feedback.

Salary and Benefits

Career intern positions may be offered at the GS-5, 7, and 9 levels. This equates to a starting salary of approximately $30,000 - $50,000, depending on the grade of the position. Positions may offer promotion potential to the GS-9 level or higher.

As a career intern, you are eligible for the full range of Federal health, life, and retirement benefits.

Career Intern opportunities are posted on our web site, and vacancy announcements are sent to colleges and universities throughout the metropolitan area. The NEA also accepts unsolicited resumes/applications. Resumes/applications additionally may be accepted from attendees at special targeted recruitment or agency events (e.g., job fairs, college recruitment activities, grants workshops). If you are interested and believe you meet our qualification requirements, follow the instructions on a posted announcement to submit your application and supporting documentation.

All career intern positions require submission of a resume and supporting documentation.

Appointment and Conversion Process

If selected for a career internship, you will be appointed in the excepted service under the Schedule B authority found in part 302, Title 5, of the Code of Federal Regulations for a period not to exceed two years. Upon successful completion of the two-year internship program, and provided you meet all qualification, suitability, and performance requirements, you may be converted noncompetitively to a career or career-conditional appointment (conversion to a non-competive appointment , however, is not guaranteed).
